Nissan GT-R Gets a Distinct Italian Influence in New Prototype
Nissan and Italdesign have teamed for the first time to create a new prototype to celebrate their respective 50th anniversaries. Meet the 2018 Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign.
This prototype’s look is an immediate eye-popper as Italdesign went above and beyond in taking the existing GT-R look and pushing it to an insane level. Up front, there is a massive gold inlay that stretches nearly the width of the vehicle, a more pronounced power bulge on the hood, and thin LED headlights.
The side view is new too as Italdesign lowered the roofline by 2.1 inches and pushed its center section downward to create raised outer portions. Italdesign also added a golden inlay in the signature cooling outlets behind the rear wheels.
The rear end shows off a new take on the signature GT-R circular taillights. Instead of being a part of the body, Italdesign floated them off the body. The rear also boasts larger wheel flares, a tapered shoulder line that draws toward the center of the trunk, additional gold accents, and a large adjustable rear spoiler. Rounding out the updates are 21-inch wheels and a Liquid Kinetic Gray paint job.
Inside, the GT-R50 receives two carbon-fiber finishes across the center console, instrument panel and door linings, black Alcantara and black Italian leather seats, gold accents, a racing-inspired gear shifter, and a flat-bottom Alcantara steering wheel with carbon-fiber spokes and exclusive center hub.

Looks are one thing, but this prototype also has the performance to match. It features a retuned version of the GT-R’s 3.8-liter V-6 with its power turned up to 710 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque. This power boost is thanks to high-flow competition-spec turbochargers, larger intercoolers, heavy-duty crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods and bearings, high-flow piston oil jets, updated camshafts, high-flow fuel injectors, optimized ignition, and updated intake and exhaust systems.
A new suspension keeps it all in check with Bilstein DampTronic I continuously adjustable dampers. Stopping duties are courtesy of six-piston Brembo front brakes and four-piston rears. Keeping this slick take on the GT-R glued to the road are Michelin Pilot Sport Super Sport tires sized 255/35R21 up front and 285/30R21 on the rear.
