Nissan Armada Vs. Toyota Sequoia: Burly SUVs Do Battle

By Justin Cupler | March 11th, 2019

Big SUVs remain a part of the automotive realm, despite crossovers gaining tons of steam in recent years. Toyota and Nissan have two of these big people-and-cargo haulers just for you in the 2019 Sequoia and 2019 Armada. Both SUVs offer big V-8 power, tons of cargo room, and big towing capacities, but which one is best for our Saginaw area buyers? Keep reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Nissan Armada boasts a uniquely rugged look that is sure to attract a few stares with its creative combination of ruggedness and class. Its upright look also suits it well in its more premium trims that include tons of chrome cladding and big, shiny wheels.

The 2019 Toyota Sequoia is a simpler SUV with its basic styling that, other than a 2018 refresh, has been essentially unchanged since 2008. While some may appreciate this simple look, it doesn’t dress up as well as the Armada. The Sequoia does, however, offer a more rugged, off-road-ready variant in its TRD Sport trim.

The 2019 Nissan Armada is 208.9 inches long, 79.9 inches wide, and 75.8 inches tall. It rides on a 121.1-inch wheelbase and has 9.1 to 9.2 inches of ground clearance.

The 2019 Sequoia checks in at 205.1 inches long, 79.9 inches wide, and 74.6 inches tall. It rides on a 122-inch wheelbase and sits much higher off the ground with 9.6 to 10 inches of ground clearance. The latter gives the Sequoia a little more off-road ability than the more luxurious-looking Armada.

Advantage: 2019 Nissan Armada

  • More upscale look
  • More modern design

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Sequoia

  • Rugged-looking TRD Pro
  • Big ground-clearance advantage

Interior

Inside, the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia can’t completely hide their truck roots, but the Armada does a slightly better job with its more rounded dash, wraparound wood trim, and wood-trimmed center-stack bezel. It also shows its premium side with standard leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and 13-speaker audio system.

The Toyota Sequoia’s upright dashboard and larger knobs are ripped straight from a pickup truck. Plus, its smaller standard touchscreen and simpler infotainment system take it down a notch.

In its front seats, the 2019 Armada offers 40.9 inches of headroom, 41.9 inches of legroom, 63.8 inches of shoulder room, and 59.2 inches of hip room. The Sequoia has significantly less headroom at 34.8 inches, but it wins in every other measurements with 42.5 inches of legroom, 66.4 inches of shoulder room, and 62.5 inches of hip room.

In its second row, the Armada offers 40 inches of headroom, 41 inches of legroom, 63.4 inches of shoulder room, and 58.4 inches of hip room. The Sequoia comes up short in headroom by 5.1 inches and legroom by 0.1 inches, but it has an extra 2.2 inches of shoulder room and 1.5 inches of hip room.

In its third row, the 2019 Armada has 36.4 inches of headroom, 28.4 inches of legroom, 60.5 inches of shoulder room, and 48.8 inches of hip room. These measurements beat the Sequoia by 1.9 inches in headroom, but the Sequoia wins by 6.9 inches in legroom, 5.2 inches in shoulder room, and 1.5 inches in hip room.

In its cargo area, the 2019 Armada can haul 16.5 cubic feet behind third row, 49.9 cubes with third row folded, and 95.4 cubes with all three rows folded. The 2019 Sequoia beats the Armada in every cargo-area measurement with 18.9 cubic feet behind third row, 66.6 cubes with third row folded, and 120.1 cubes with all three rows folded.

Advantage: 2019 Nissan Armada

  • More premium standard features
  • Booming base audio system

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Sequoia

  • Roomier seating
  • Massive cargo area

Performance

The 2019 Nissan Armada comes with a 5.6-liter V-8 that cranks out 390 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque. This engine pairs with a seven-speed automatic transmission that ships power to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive is available as an option.

The 2019 Toyota Sequoia boasts a 5.7-liter V-8 engine with 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. This routes through a six-speed automatic transmission and out to the rear wheels. Optional all-wheel drive is available.

The Sequoia may lack the power of the Armada, but it does have a sportier variant in the TRD Sport model. This trim adds 20-inch black wheels, sport-tuned Bilstein shocks, tightened front and rear sway bars, and more.

Large SUVs need to handle moderate towing, and the 2019 Armada delivers with an 8,500-pound capacity. The Sequoia is almost as capable, but it comes up short at 7,400 pounds.

With massive bodies and big V-8 engines, neither SUV is great on fuel economy. The 2019 Armada gets up to 14 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. The Sequoia comes up short by 1 mpg across the board.

Advantage: 2019 Nissan Armada

  • Slight power advantage
  • 1,100-pound towing advantage
  • 1 mpg fuel economy advantage

Advantage: 2019 Toyota Sequoia

  • More torque
  • Performance-tuned TRD Sport model
